Meet Idea Girls: Layla & Mya Parish

Meet Layla and Mya, the sister duo better known as Suga Babes. Four years ago, these 15- and 11-year-old entrepreneurs decided to make their own all-natural bath and beauty products. Since then, they have expanded to selling their products as well as providing a mobile spa service for other girls. Read on to learn about these sisters and their idea.

WHAT ACTIVITIES ARE YOU INVOLVED IN?

Layla: I am involved in the National Society of High School Scholars. My hobbies are singing, dancing, and putting fashion pieces together.

Mya: I do gymnastics, film production, and photography. I also like swimming and reading.

DESCRIBE YOUR IDEA OR PROJECT THAT YOU ARE WORKING ON.

Layla: One of the projects that I'm working on is a fashion, food and lifestyle blog with my mom and sister. I came up with this idea by reading other related blogs. I told my mom and of course she was on board. She is our biggest supporter. My sister and I along with my mom also have a mobile spa business for girls ages 5-13, Suga Babes.

Mya: We make all natural bath and body products, too. We go into people’s homes and transform them into a luxurious spa! We have been in business for a little over 4 years now and I absolutely love it.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THIS IDEA?

Mya: We loved using our moms bath and beauty products and she would always run us out of her things. So, we decided instead of buying our own, why not make our own! We told our mom our idea and she was on board. We first started selling sugar scrubs, lotions, body mists and soaps online and then we ventured out to providing mobile spa parties for girls.

WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED SO FAR AND HOW HAVE YOU OVERCOME THEM?

Mya: The challenge for us so far is that we are at a point where we need help! Our mom is the all-around person. She does our marketing, she created our website, does all of our promotional items, she is the scheduler of the parties, she is the buyer and shipper of our products and so much more. So, as you can see she does it all. My mom is now looking into interns to come on board to learn the ropes and help us. We are excited about that because we know that our product and idea is great! Even though we have a challenge does not and will not stop us. We do what we can and do it with a spirit of excellence (that’s our mom’s saying). Our mom has taught us that there will be challenges but you never quit you keep going, no matter what!

WHAT ARE SOME GOOD THINGS THAT HAVE HAPPENED SINCE YOU STARTED YOUR IDEA?

Layla: We are so motivated and ready to share our passion for business with the world. Our main
purpose we believe in this season is to help other young girls realize their purpose and that
their dreams do matter.

Mya: Since we started our idea we have been able to use it as a platform to inspire other girls. That is the best part about our mobile spa business. Before we start the services, we give a 3-5-minute talk on how we got started and how you can do anything you put your mind to. Being an inspiration to others is what we call success. Leaving an imprint! We also love the fact that we have been featured on Fox 26 News Houston, on the front page of the business section of the Houston Chronicle, in the Wall Street Journal, and numerous online magazine just to name a few!

WHAT DO YOU STILL NEED HELP WITH FOR YOUR IDEA? HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOU?

Mya: We need a graphic designer to re-design our labels for our products, a marketing person to help us push our business to another level, and investors. My mom pours all of our extra money into our business and it is good but we need some more! We know that our business is going to take off. We have been told that multiple times. We are patiently waiting for our season.

Layla: We would love your support by sharing our story with moms and girls.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUNGER GIRLS THAT HAVE AN IDEA THEY WANT TO MAKE HAPPEN?

Layla: The advice that I would give to girls is to stay focused and do what you love to do.

Mya: My advice to younger girls would be that when you have a dream, do not be afraid to tell your parents. Do not think that you are too young to start a business and live your dream. Take steps to living your dream. You can’t just tell your parents your dreams and not take action. Work your business or whatever it is you are doing. When you fail or you think you failed, never quit. Keep going. Learn from those lessons. We learned a lot from our lessons. We have never ran a business before so it was a lot of learning along the way. Our mom taught us a lot. She showed us the numbers on how much was spent vs. what was coming in. And what was going out was more than what was coming in. But she never said we can’t do it anymore or that we don’t have the money to keep doing this. She kept going and there were some things she did not even tell us until now. So, my advice is to never ever quit!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE OR MANTRA?

Layla: "If you're always trying to be normal you will never know how amazing you can be." -Maya
Angelou

Mya: "The difference between winning and losing is most often not quitting." -Walt Disney
