Meet an Idea Girl: Amelia Rodriguez

Amelia Rodriguez is currently a freshman at the University of Iowa. She is a member of the honors program as well as Alpha Chi Omega sorority, where she serves on the public relations committee. Her big idea began last year, when she was a senior in high school working with the Iowa BIG program. Read on for our interview with her.

WHAT IS YOUR IDEA AND HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH IT?

I was previously the President of Success to the Power of SHE (SuccessSHE). It was a women's empowerment group that was started at Iowa BIG, and it had three main initiatives last year: Minnow Tank, Gussy Down, and IWLC Young Leaders Track. I joined the existing project through Iowa BIG that was created by Kinzie Farmer. You can find out more at successshe.org.

WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED SO FAR AND HOW HAVE YOU OVERCOME THEM?

The challenge I faced the most was delegation. It was unfair to me and my team if I didn't delegate the tasks. It turned out to be too big of a work load for me and they got bored. To avoid this problem, I started assigning tasks to my teammates based on their interests/skills. It was also a great way to get to know them better, because I got to learn more about their strengths in the process.

WHAT ARE SOME GOOD THINGS THAT HAVE HAPPENED SINCE YOU STARTED YOUR IDEA?

Working on SuccessSHE helped me discover some of my passions: leadership, marketing, women's studies, and entrepreneurship. It also helped me choose a college major.

WHAT DO YOU STILL NEED HELP WITH FOR YOUR IDEA? HOW CAN WE SUPPORT YOU?

We would like to make the Twitter account active again, so tagging @SuccessSHE in any relevant posts would be awesome!

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG GIRLS THAT WANT TO MAKE THEIR IDEAS HAPPEN?

I want young girls to not be afraid to try new things. Oftentimes, we scare ourselves into not trying out new ideas because we are afraid of failure. Sometimes, things won't work out, but if you use your failed attempt as a learning experience, it will turn into a beneficial moment of growth for you and your future ideas.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE HOBBIES?

I enjoy learning, creating, shopping, being outdoors, and being around people.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE OR MANTRA?

"We have all a better guide in ourselves... than any other person can be." -Jane Austen
